Charity Work

At St Thomas More we are committed to supporting people in situations worse than our own. Therefore we support a number of local, national and international charities. Each year the students make donations of money, clothing and food to numerous charities, and each year group has their own designated charity.

Students in school raise money and give to the following charities:

Y7:

Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30): Our Y7s were asked at their welcome mass to take £1 each and use it wisely. There were asked to make that £1 grow into more. They went away and using their own initiative they made their pounds grow. Last year we raised £800 for Father Hudsons and we are hoping for similar results with this year's Y7 students.

On the last day of term we had a Christmas jumper day where each student brought in a £1 so that they could wear a Christmas jumper. This was a great success fundraising over £1100.

The year 9 students will be collecting food to donate to the Foodbank throughout the year. The students have food collection points to drop off any food they have to donate. The food will then be sent to the Foodbank once a term and distributed to those in need.

Y10:

Year 10's will be doing various fundraising activities for the 'Douglas Macmillan Hospice', such as the 'Bag it, Bring it' campaign.

During lent our year 11's had a massive push to raise money for their chosen charity, through the 'Bag it, Bring it' campaign. Over a few weeks students collected and donated quality items, that could then be sold on in Douglas Macmillan charity shops. Overall the students managed to donate enough items to sell for £1040.

The Sixth Form take a vote each term on which charity to support, currently they are focusing their fundraising efforts for 'Mind' and the Lourdes pilgrimage.

This year we are also supporting the Jimmy Mizzen foundation, as a school wide charity. Early in the year Barry and Margret Mizen visited the school to share their families story with our students, about the wonderful life and sad death of their son, Jimmy, to promote the importance of peace. As a school we will be doing various fundraising to support the work of this fantastic charity.
