Literacy

Here at St Thomas More Literacy really is a collaborative approach and is evident across the Academy and curriculum.  All teachers at the Academy teach Literacy through the effective use of keywords, Literacy feedback and promoting a love of reading.

Indeed reading is priority at the Academy. We deliver a reading programme in year 7 and 8 called ‘Accelerated Reader’ which boosts students’ reading ages through their daily reading. All pupils read as a form time activity and there is a bespoke Literacy Form Programme which improves fundamental Literacy skills.

Reading

We recognise that reading skills are essential to student success therefore; this is a priority across the Academy.

DEAR Time – Drop Everything And Read (Year 7 and 8)

The ultimate reasoning behind DEAR Time is to encourage your children to read widely and often. During DEAR your child will have fifteen minutes dedicated reading time a day. Staff model reading to the students and your child will have the opportunity to read texts of their choice.

If a child forgets their book they will be provided with a suitable text from their form tutor/subject teacher. Every year 7 and 8 form teacher has a dedicated book box for these rare occasions.

Accelerated Reader

The English department along with our Librarian runs 'Accelerated Reader' which all students in Year 7-8 are now participating in. 'Accelerated Reader'' is a reading intervention program that develops your child’s reading skills in a creative and enjoyable way. It offers a personalised approach to reading for all students as they can quiz on books specific to their ability. Please encourage your child’s love of reading at home too. We want them to succeed!

Word of the Week

Word of the Week is chosen to extend and improve student vocabulary. It is often topical and can be used across the curriculum. This is shared with the students during form time and can be found on the school VLE.

English Speaking Board (Year 7)

The ESB Secondary qualification is currently being trialled in year 7 and allows students to become confident and assured communicators. It offers students the opportunity to gain an OFQUAL recognised qualification in excellent communication.
