About our Physical Education Department

The Physical Education Department has made many developments in the last 8 years. There has been an increase in full time specialist teachers from 3 to 5 members of staff. The quality of teaching is good overall with many strands graded as very good to outstanding. The department has a productive blend of youth and experience with 3 members of the department having been here from 10-25 years.

Our lessons have a diverse range of activities implemented into our curriculum to compliment the new National Curriculum's Physical Education structure. Students are engaged through lessons of good pace and challenging set tasks to complete. Students are encouraged to strive to achieve their potential and have a competitive nature set in a relaxed atmosphere. Relationships between staff and students are respectful and very good. Staff ensures students get to work and develop their skills in both heterogeneous groups and in non-social circles to help improve qualities such as leadership and communications skills.

The P.E. department is well resourced with 2 lap top trolleys for students to use in the classroom all connected to the school network. There is also diverse equipment including 8 Nintendo Wiii's with 8 flat screen televisions to engage students who may not prefer traditional activities and as an additional tool to use in poor weather conditions.

The P.E. department has excellent links with local primary schools and clubs, where sports coaches have run courses for students to attend and festivals have been run for primary schools students with our staff and students.

St Thomas More Catholic Academy has a clear message that encourages our students to learn and become involved in a close knit community. The P.E. department reflects this message through our teaching and learning and our extra-curricular provision.

The Department has been especially pleased with the results achieved changing from G.C.S.E. Physical Education to BTEC First Diploma in Sport. Where the course can be tailored to suits the needs of the individual student whether they are striving to achieve 4 A*'s or 1 grade C. We are very proud of the fact that on many occasions we have helped students to over achieve beyond their target grade.

We are also pleased with the success gained from our AS level and A2 Physical Education course where a high proportion of our students will go onto University based on their achievements in A level P.E. One of our main priorities is to continue developing the number of students who study A level Physical Education at our College in conjunction with the Trinity Sixth form.
