Safeguarding

St Thomas More Catholic Academy is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.  We recognise that all adults, including temporary staff, volunteers and academy representatives, have a full and active part to play in protecting our students from harm, and that the child or young person’s welfare is our paramount concern.

We believe that St Thomas More Catholic Academy should provide a caring, positive, safe and stimulating environment that promotes the social, emotional, physical and moral development of the individual child or young person.

We have a Safeguarding And Child Protection Policy which clearly outlines the procedures in place within our school.  All staff (including supply staff, volunteers and governors) must ensure that they are aware of these procedures. Parents and carers are welcome to read the policy on this website.

Sometimes we may need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies when there are concerns about a child or young person’s welfare. 

We will ensure that our concerns about our students are discussed with his/her parents/carers first unless we have reason to believe that such a move would be contrary to the child or young person’s welfare.

We have a team of Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSL) to support our students. Our lead DSL is Mrs J Stubbs (Assistant Headteacher).  The Assistant Child Protection Officers are Mrs A Staton (Head Of Key Stage 3) and Miss L Whitemore (Head Of Key Stage 4).

 

Staff training:

To ensure the safeguarding of our students, the following training has been completed by all staff:

  • Level 1 Child Protection training (delivered by SOT SCB)

  • Prevent training (delivered by Staffordshire Police)

  • CSE Awareness (delivered by Staffordshire Police)

Student curriculum:

PSHE education is a school subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepare for life and work in modern Britain. Evidence shows that well-delivered PSHE programmes have an impact on both academic and non-academic outcomes for pupils, particularly the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.

Our PSHE education ensures that all of our students receive information which helps them to stay safe and aims to develop skills and attributes such as resilience, self-esteem, risk-management, teamworking and critical thinking in the context of learning grouped into three core themes: health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world (including economic wellbeing and aspects of careers education).

Key topics covered include:

  • Prevent / radicalisation (delivered by Game On and endorsed by the Home office)

  • Chelsea’s Choice (to support with the CSE awareness)

  • Crash Course (to support with road safety)

  • Gang culture

  • E-safety

  • Anti-bullying

  • Forced arrange marriage / honour based violence
